The RNK Bastion™ is Acura Embedded Systems' groundbreaking innovation, representing the absolute forefront of HazLoc (Hazardous Location) computing for the most extreme and dangerous industrial environments. Specifically designed as a Zone 1 Offshore Rig Floor Computer (HMI), the RNK Bastion is engineered to deliver unparalleled power, safety, and reliability in conditions where flammable gases are continuously present.

It is the culmination of Acura's 30+ years of experience in rugged technology, pushing performance boundaries in ways previously thought impossible.

1. What is the RNK Bastion? A Core Definition

The RNK Bastion is a purpose-built, all-in-one HazLoc Panel PC designed for the most critical offshore drilling operations. It is distinguished by its:

Zone 1 / Class 1 Division 1 (C1D1) Certification: The highest level of HazLoc safety, indicating it can operate safely in environments where explosive gases are normally present.

Offshore Rig Floor HMI: Functions as the Human-Machine Interface directly on the rig floor, providing control and monitoring capabilities.

Most Powerful & Lightest-Weight Zone 1 HMI: Acura proudly positions it as the most powerful and lightest-weight Zone 1 certified HazLoc HMI in the world, a significant competitive advantage.

Uncompromising Performance: Integrates advanced, next-generation components for seamless operational efficiency.

2. Uncompromising Performance: Powering Critical Operations

The RNK Bastion is built with cutting-edge internal components to ensure maximum processing power and speed for demanding real-time applications.

Processor (CPU): Features best-in-class Alder Lake Intel i5 or i7 processors. Alder Lake architecture combines performance and efficiency cores, making it highly capable for Machine Learning, AI, and advanced automation tasks.

Memory (RAM): Utilizes ultra-fast DDR5 RAM, supporting up to 64GB DDR5. This latest generation of memory provides significantly faster data access, crucial for handling large datasets and complex real-time operations.

Storage (SSD): Equipped with high-performance M.2 NVMe SSD storage, configurable up to 4TB. NVMe SSDs offer incredibly rapid data read/write speeds, ensuring quick boot times and swift application loading.

Brightness (1000 NITS High Bright): The display boasts 1000 NITS screen brightness. This "high bright" feature ensures crystal-clear visibility even in direct sunlight on offshore rigs, preventing washout and glare.

Screen Resolution: Provides Full HD resolution at 1920x1080P (Full HD), delivering sharp and detailed visuals for critical data.

Touch Screen: Features a Capacitive Multi-Touch touchscreen. This responsive technology allows for intuitive interaction, even with gloves, enhancing safety and efficiency for operators.

3. Durability and Environmental Resilience: Built for the Deep End

The RNK Bastion is engineered for the most extreme and hazardous offshore environments, where failure is not an option.

Operating Temperature: Designed for a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +60°C (-40°F to 140°F), ensuring dependable performance in varied and harsh offshore climates.

Storage Temperature: Can be stored in temperatures ranging from -40°C to +60°C (-40°F to 140°F).

Relative Humidity: Operates in environments with relative humidity of <96% (non-condensing).

IP Rating (IP66-All Sides): This is a critical feature for offshore environments. The RNK Bastion boasts an IP66 rating on all sides, meaning it is completely dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. This ensures it can withstand heavy rain, sea spray, and rigorous washdowns without internal damage.

Construction: Features a patented, lightweight aluminum anodized alloy frame with a non-encapsulated design. This construction contributes to its impressive light weight while providing robust protection.

Body: Has a fully sealed chassis, preventing any ingress of contaminants.

4. Connectivity: Reliable Links in Critical Operations

The RNK Bastion provides essential connectivity options for offshore rig environments, ensuring reliable data flow.

LAN: Includes 1x RJ45 GBE (Gigabit Ethernet) port, providing high-speed wired network connectivity.

Video: Features 1x HDMI port for display output.

USB: Equipped with 1x USB 3.0 port for versatile peripheral connectivity.

Wi-Fi: Includes AX 210 Wi-Fi 6E for high-speed wireless networking.

Connectors: Utilizes EX+/MIL-Grade connectors, ensuring robust and secure connections that can withstand harsh environmental factors and prevent ignition sources.

Power Input: Accepts 110-240V AC power input, allowing for universal compatibility with rig power systems globally.

5. Key Applications and Use Cases

The RNK Bastion is specifically designed for:

Offshore Rig Floor Computing: Its primary application is as the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) directly on the drilling rig floor in offshore environments.

Zone 1 Hazardous Locations: Essential for operations where explosive gases are continuously present, requiring the highest level of safety certification.

Demanding Oil & Gas Operations: Provides critical control and monitoring capabilities in the most challenging and regulated segments of the industry.

6. RNK Bastion vs. Standard Roughneck: The Pinnacle Difference

While the Roughneck is Acura's flagship and highly customizable HazLoc Panel PC, the RNK Bastion is a specialized, even more advanced variant, specifically engineered to excel in the most extreme and regulated HazLoc environments. The RNK Bastion represents the pinnacle of Zone 1 rig floor computing, building upon the Roughneck's foundation with key enhancements:

Certification Level (Primary Difference):

RNK Bastion: Purpose-built and certified for Class 1 Zone 1 (C1D1) environments. This is the most stringent HazLoc classification, meaning it's designed for areas where explosive gases are always present under normal operating conditions. This is a significantly higher safety standard than C1D2.

Roughneck (Standard): Primarily certified for Class 1 Division 2 (C1D2) / Zone 2 (Z2), where hazardous substances are present only under abnormal conditions. While Acura is pursuing C1D1 for the general Roughneck line, the Bastion is already designed and certified for this top tier.

Weight Advantage in Zone 1:

RNK Bastion: Marketed as the lightest-weight Zone 1 certified HazLoc HMI in the world, averaging ~28.2 lbs (12.7 KG). Its patented lightweight aluminum alloy chassis with a non-encapsulated design is almost half the weight of typical competitors in the Zone 1 space. This is crucial for offshore platforms where space and weight are at a premium.

Roughneck (Standard): While already lightweight for its class (~13 lbs for 15.6", ~24 lbs for 22"), the Bastion's weight advantage is specifically emphasized for its Zone 1 classification.

Performance Components (Next-Generation Focus):

RNK Bastion: Explicitly features Alder Lake Intel i5 or i7 processors and ultra-fast DDR5 RAM. This indicates a focus on the very latest processor architectures and memory technologies for uncompromising performance in critical Zone 1 applications.

Roughneck (Standard): Uses Intel i5 or i7 CPUs and DDR4 RAM, with a future goal of i9 CPUs. The Bastion integrates these next-gen components as a core offering.

IP Rating:

RNK Bastion: Boasts an IP66 rating on all sides, offering superior protection against powerful water jets.

Roughneck (Standard): Typically has an IP65 rating on all sides.

Target Environment:

RNK Bastion: Specifically designed and optimized for offshore rig floor environments, where Zone 1 conditions are more prevalent.

Roughneck (Standard): Versatile for both onshore rig floors and other extreme outdoor HazLoc applications.

In summary, the RNK Bastion is not just a Roughneck; it is Acura's specialized, top-tier HazLoc HMI, engineered to meet the most stringent safety requirements and deliver uncompromising performance in the highly demanding and safety-critical Zone 1 offshore environments, setting a new standard for the industry.
