Tablets
In today's fast-paced industrial world, having access to information and control on the go is absolutely essential. But let's be honest, your everyday consumer tablet – the kind you use to browse the internet or watch movies at home – simply won't survive the brutal realities of industrial environments.
Imagine dropping it on a concrete floor, spilling oil on it, exposing it to scorching heat or freezing cold, or using it in a dust storm. It would break in an instant.
This is precisely where Acura Embedded Systems steps in with our specialized line of Rugged Tablets. These aren't just "tougher" versions of your regular tablet; they are entirely different machines, purpose-built from the ground up to withstand the most challenging conditions imaginable.
They provide powerful performance and specialized features tailored specifically for industrial professionals who need reliable computing power right in their hands, no matter where they are.
1. What are Rugged Tablets? They're Not Your Average Tablet!
Think of a rugged tablet as taking the convenience of a touchscreen tablet and combining it with the bulletproof durability of military-grade equipment. It's a mobile computer without a built-in keyboard (though you can easily add external ones), controlled primarily by touching the screen, but engineered for ultimate survival and performance in extreme conditions.
Here's how Acura's Rugged Tablets are fundamentally different from common (consumer) tablets:
Durability (Built Like a Tank):
Common Tablet: Designed for gentle use, easily gets cracked screens from a small drop, sensitive to impacts, and definitely not waterproof.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): These are built like they're going into battle. They are designed and tested to survive significant drops (e.g., from 4 to 6 feet onto hard surfaces), resist constant vibrations (like in a moving vehicle or near heavy machinery), and withstand extreme impacts. Crucially, they are fully sealed against dust and water, meaning no tiny particles or liquids can sneak inside to damage the sensitive electronics. Think of them as the "special forces" of tablets – ready for anything.
Environmental Resilience (Works Anywhere, Anytime):
Common Tablet: Designed for comfortable indoor, room-temperature use. It will quickly fail or malfunction if exposed to extreme heat, freezing cold, excessive dust, or moisture.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): Our tablets are engineered to operate reliably across an incredibly wide range of extreme temperatures. For instance, they can function perfectly from a freezing -29°C to a scorching +63°C (-20°F to 145°F). This ensures they perform flawlessly whether you're in a Canadian winter or a desert summer. Their sealed design also actively prevents dust and water from getting in, protecting the delicate internal components.
Certifications (Proven Safety & Toughness):
Common Tablet: Has very few, if any, industrial or safety certifications.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): This is a huge differentiator. Our tablets carry multiple, rigorous certifications that formally prove their toughness and safety:
MIL-STD-810H: This is a military standard, meaning the tablets have been tested against extreme environmental conditions like shock, vibration, high/low temperatures, altitude, and humidity. It’s like a military-grade stamp of approval for durability.
IP65/IP66: These are "Ingress Protection" ratings. The first number (6) means they are completely dust-tight. The second number (5 or 6) indicates water protection: IP65 means protected against water jets, and IP66 means protected against powerful water jets. This ensures they can be hosed down or used in heavy rain.
MIL-STD-461G: Another military standard, this one is for electromagnetic compatibility. It ensures the tablet won't interfere with other sensitive electronic equipment and won't be affected by external electromagnetic noise, which is common in industrial settings.
HazLoc (Hazardous Location) Certifications (e.g., ANSI/ISA 12.12.01, CSA C22.2 NO. 213 for Class 1, Division 2): These are critical safety certifications for environments where explosive gases or dust might be present. A Class 1, Division 2 certification means the tablet is built to prevent any internal spark from igniting the surrounding atmosphere under abnormal conditions. These are formal "stamps of approval" proving they can handle extreme and potentially dangerous conditions safely.
Connectivity (More Options, More Robust, Always Connected):
Common Tablet: Usually just basic Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and one or two simple USB ports.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): Offer a much wider range of input/output (I/O) ports for industrial use (multiple USB, HDMI for external screens, LAN for wired internet, Serial ports for older industrial machines). They also have advanced wireless options like dedicated GPS for precise location, 4G LTE and even 5G Sub-6 for fast mobile internet, and "Tri-antenna pass-through" for super strong and reliable wireless connections. This ensures reliable communication even in remote or complex industrial settings.
Display (Always Visible, Even with Gloves!):
Common Tablet: Screens can be very difficult to read in bright sunlight, often appearing washed out.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): Feature special "LumiBond displays with Getac sunlight readable technology" and very high brightness (typically 800-1000 NITS). This ensures the screen remains perfectly readable even in direct sunlight.
Crucially, our touchscreens are often "glove-compatible." This means operators can interact with the tablet using their work gloves, without having to take them off. This is a massive safety and efficiency benefit in dirty, cold, or dangerous environments where removing gloves is not an option.
Power Management (Never Stop Working):
Common Tablet: Has a limited battery life and usually no way to swap out batteries quickly.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): Often feature "LifeSupport™ battery swappable technology." This is a huge advantage: you can change a low battery for a fully charged one without shutting down the device. This ensures continuous operation during long shifts or critical tasks, eliminating downtime.
Security (Protecting Your Valuable Data):
Common Tablet: Basic security features, easily accessible.
Rugged Tablet (Acura's Offering): Come with enhanced enterprise-grade security features. These include TPM 2.0 (a secure chip that protects data), Windows Hello face-authentication (for secure login), RFID/NFC (for secure identification), and fingerprint scanners. This ensures sensitive data is protected in the field.
